Throw a stylish and eco-friendly picnic with these tips

You know tablescaping, but have you heard of 'blanketscaping'? This new alfresco trend takes effect a couple of inches below the table – on the ground, to be exact. Like tablescaping, blanketscaping refers to the art of creatively and aesthetically arranging plates, bowls and glassware – but instead of the dinner table, you use a picnic blanket.

Picnics have been a summer staple since, well, a very long time ago. The alfresco feast has its origins in the Middle Ages, when food was brought out to huntsmen on horsebacks. But it wasn’t until the 17th century that French aristocrats turned on-the-floor snacking into something utterly chic. It was also French settlers who founded London's Pic Nic Society in 1801.

With blanketscaping, outdoor dining just levelled up again – and for good reason. 'A picnic is more than just a meal outdoors – it's an opportunity to reconnect with nature, share quality time, and create lasting memories with those we care about,' says Zoe Turner, head of brand development at iconic British pottery brand Denby.

And with a little thoughtful planning, she says, 'You can elevate a simple outdoor gathering into an unforgettable experience.' Keep reading to find out how to create the perfect blanketscape for your next summer picnic.

'Every great picnic starts with a solid base: the blanket,' says Zoe. She recommends a generous blanket to offer enough room for everyone to sit on comfortably. For larger gatherings, opt for two or more blankets spread out next to each other.

Suitable materials are cotton, wool or fleece, according to Zoe. Ideally, choose picnic blankets with a thicker weave and a waterproof underside (plus, they often come with handles). ‘Steer clear of very light colours like white and cream, as they’re more likely to collect grass stains and show food spills,’ she adds.

Now the fun begins. ‘Start by layering your base blanket with scatter cushions, padded seat mats and a cosy throw. A neutral-toned blanket paired with soft pastel accents or earthy hues creates a calming, welcoming look that still feels refined,’ suggests Zoe.

To accessorise, use linen napkins and fabric bunting, which add a handcrafted touch while avoiding waste. Want to go the extra mile? Arrange fresh-cut or dried flowers in a small jug or ceramic vase with a wide base to keep it from tipping over. Fairy lights or LED tealights placed in mason jars create an ambient glow as the sun starts to set, while music played on a portable speaker rounds off the atmosphere, 'making your picnic feel like a truly curated experience', says Zoe.

It’s tempting to reach for single-use plastic plates and cups when planning a picnic, but Zoe advises against this. ‘Embracing a sustainable picnic setup not only reduces waste but offers a chance to add a touch of personal style to your outdoor dining experience,’ she says.

Instead, she recommends cutlery made from sturdy but stylish materials like bamboo, metal or rice husk, and chip-resistant ceramic plates, bowls and serving dishes, which are designed specifically for alfresco use. ‘Wooden serving boards also complement the setup, offering a rustic feel,’ she adds. To keep food fresh, opt for sleek stainless steel containers, which are eco-friendly and don’t put a damper on your carefully curated blanketscape.

Without food, of course, there is no picnic. ‘The best picnic menus are easy to transport, simple to assemble, and bursting with seasonal flavour. Think fresh, unfussy and shareable, with a little something for everyone,’ says Zoe.

Picnic favourites, like mini quiches or frittatas, are wonderful whether warm or chilled. Dips like guacamole, hummus and tzatziki are always popular too, especially when served with fresh vegetables, crackers or flatbread. For something equally shareable but extra aesthetic, build a charcuterie board with cheeses, cured meats, fruits, olives, crackers and bread. If you’re short on time, Zoe says, opt for pastries from your local bakery.‘Alternatively, consider a potluck-style picnic: ask each guest to bring a dish to share.
